Saliva hormone testing is an accurate and easy way for a man or a woman to assess their hormone levels. Many studies have shown this method of testing to be more accurate than that of blood testing. The hormones such as estradiol, progesterone, testosterone and estrogen, which you may have thought could only be tested by blood, are also present in our saliva.
There are 30 years of documented saliva testing proven by the World Health Organization. It is very accurate, convenient and non-invasive. Steroid hormones in our saliva reflect the portion of circulating hormones in the blood that are unbound by serum binding proteins (free or bio-available) and are able to enter the tissues through the body.
Your hormones should exist in harmony with each other. When levels of each hormone are in the right proportions, body systems are stable. When balance is lost, hormone deficiencies and excesses can cause chronic symptoms and disorders, and raise risks for disease.
A whole host of symptoms may signify an imbalance:
Loss of libido (sex drive)
If you have tried to figure out what is happening or perhaps treated your symptoms in ways that don’t seem to work, testing your hormones may be the first step to feeling better.
Hormone saliva testing tells us the amount of hormones in our body that are actually usable by our cells; whereas blood testing evaluates all circulating hormones regardless of their availability to our cells.
Blood testing is good for some things, such as detecting menopause and confirming ovulation, but blood testing cannot accurately measure hormone levels during hormone replacement treatment.
Saliva testing is better for monitoring hormone replacement, and it is also a good choice for assessing oestrogen dominance (a result of environmental everyday toxins we are exposed to which cause a reaction in our bodies to produce more estrogen) and cortisol. Looking at hormones are a tricky business because our levels always fluctuate greatly during the day.
Another method of hormone testing is the 24-Hour Urinary Hormone test. It has many advantages too. It measures total daily hormone production and metabolism and this avoids inaccuracy due to fluctuations of total amounts. Secondly, it measures hormone metabolites as well as primary hormones. Hormone metabolites are hormones whose molecular structure has been changed in order to be excreted from the body. Some metabolites such as 16-hydroxy oestrone are particularly risky for breast cancer. If you find that after receiving saliva testing results and treatment, you are still experiencing problems, this would be your next option down the road, as I recommend the saliva panel first.
Also, we need to be aware that just knowing your hormone levels is not even enough. Hormone balance and function is affected by other aspects of health, such as bowel and liver function.
Anyone can do this easy saliva hormone test. A kit can be purchased with test tubes and directions as to how and when to collect your saliva in them. When finished, it is conveniently mailed back to the laboratory for results. These results are then mailed to you and your health practitioner. I am able to provide my clients with a dependable testing kit for a reasonable cost. Contact me for more information if you are interested.
