What you do, and how you do it, is secondary to why. Simon Sinek, in his TED Talk lecture, How Great Leaders Inspire Action, states the distinction of successful people and corporations as those who know “why” they do what they do, not just knowing how they do it and what they do. I believe that why we do what we do, not only inspires and creates big things, but is also the determining factor of whether we are happy, content and set free in our own being!
Many of you know that opening the studio in Miami, in April, has challenged me beyond anything I have ever experienced professionally and personally. Today, I can honestly tell you that Bala Vinyasa Yoga has saved my life and transformed who I am to my bones because the practice and the process of yoga works. It gives me access to experience all my emotions, sit with them, even when I want to flee, and to awaken to the power of my life! Everyday, I could choose to lead from my head, my fears and doubt, but through the power of this practice, I have the tools to come back to my heart and my gut and lead for the highest intention for humanity and myself.
The practice of yoga begins once we walk out of the studio. That is where it separates the masters from the novices. We either use the tools we have or we don’t. We are either coming from our fears, doubt, or blame therefore not taking accountability. Or we chose to own our actions, take responsibility for who we are being. Every moment of every day, ask yourself “why am I doing this, saying this, thinking this?” I do not practice this perfectly by any means; yet I strive to maintain the practice of inquiry.
Why do I do what I do? It is because when I stand in the integrity of my practice, truly listening to my gut and use the tools that I have, it restores my belief in the possibility of humanity. I trust in the power of God’s grace and believe in the generosity of each and every person. This is a constant practice in every moment, to get out of my head, and LISTEN to the divine whispers of my soul! For me, this is the key to freedom and power and that is why I do what I do!
