“Your friends know your song. And sing when you forget it. Those who love you can not be fooled by mistakes you have committed, or dark images you show to others. They remember your beauty as you feel ugly, your total when you’re broke, your innocence when you feel guilty and your purpose when you’re confused.” ~ Tolba Phanem, African poet
“Your friends know ‘your song’. And sing when you forget it.”
In certain African tribes, a song is created when a child is born. It is their song only, no one else shares it. You sing it at the birth of the child, again when they get married, and when a person passes into the next world, those they leave behind sing their song in their honor. But even more amazing than this is what happens in the tribe when someone does something wrong. Instead of punishing them, they are taken into the middle of a circle of the whole tribe. The tribe then sings them their song, believing that they could only have done something wrong by forgetting who they are. This sacred circle reminds them with love and compassion that they are light and joy and deserve a peaceful life.
Let the community of thousands here in the 40 Day Global Sadhanas sing your song for you. Let me sing it for you. Let us remind each other who we really are. Let us sing to our children so that they remember, and let them sing back to us, so that we don’t forget. Â And you can tell everybody that this is Your Song….

“Soon the child’s clear eye is clouded over by ideas and opinions, preconceptions and abstractions. Simple free being becomes encrusted with the burdensome armor of the ego. Not until years later does an instinct come that a vital sense of mystery has been withdrawn. The sun glints through the pines, and the heart is pierced in a moment of beauty and strange pain, like a memory of paradise. After that day, we become seekers.” ~ Peter Matthiessen
“The heart is pierced in a moment of beauty and strange pain, like a memory of paradise. After that day we become seekers.” I remember when my day came. It happened just like that, as if an arrow pierced my heart in that one moment of beauty and with a strange pain that made me weep uncontrollably, I remembered a way into bliss.
It came in sacred song and with the words of a language I had never before heard. When I heard them sung so sweetly, these mysterious syllables that that were are once familiar and foreign, I knew that my destiny had come for me. After that I worked tirelessly to acquire knowledge of the path of Kundalini yoga and the technology of the Shabad Guru, or the wisdom in the songs. I became a seeker, which is the real meaning of the word “Sikh”.
If that day has come for you, may you remember it. Feel again the thrill as a bell inside you rang and woke you up. And if that day hasn’t come, sit in blessed expectation, for it will. In the act of wanting it, you are calling it to you.
Be a seeker. Find a way to inspire yourself and move into a place of peace. Be the force for change in your world. Stand ready for miracles. Be the sentinel that watches for the dawning of delight. Allow the memory of paradise to unfold within your heart, spill forth, and bless this earth with its sweetness, with your sweetness. Â ”Keep up and you will be kept up.” ~Yogi Bhajan
“If your everyday practice is open to all your emotions, to all the people you meet, to all the situations you encounter, without closing down . . . then you will understand all the teachings that anyone has ever taught.” ~ Pema Chodron
Can you sit in the silence of your darkest night and stay open? Can you look upon the face of the person who has hurt you most and feel love? Can you see the Divine in the sinner as well as the saint?
This is all that has ever been taught: to stay present to the force of Love within you regardless of circumstance, to act with the integrity of Love in all your dealings, and to experience the presence of Love in all the moments of your life. Love, only love, is real. You are on the cusp of being one of the Great Ones. Let the heart rule and step into your destiny.
“Everything in your life is there as a vehicle for your transformation. Use it!” said Ram Dass. Decide that today everything that comes your way is the avenue to your own outrageous joy. Somehow, someway you are being transformed and being given the opportunity to open, expand, grow and reach for something new. Sounds pretty fabulous to me! Decision made!
