Looking Ahead With Lauren: Pondering The Future

the-future-next-exitLooking ahead. The future. Moving forward. This column is calling Looking Ahead with Lauren because it can be anything I want it to be, just like the future. The future is a strange place. It is a place that doesn’t exist yet. Every minute our future becomes our present based on the decisions we make and the good or bad fortune that falls upon us.

Ever get asked in a job interview, “Where do you see yourself in ten years?” Ugh. I hate that question! I always think, How am I supposed to know? While the question annoys me in interviews, it is a good question to ponder in life. I don’t know about you, but my head is often in the future more than it should be. I think about what job I’ll have, if I’ll be married, what kind of house I’ll live in, if I’ll have kids, etc. At times it can be exciting – maybe I’ll be a millionaire one day! Or it can be scary – what if I get a disease or what will I do when my loved ones die?

The funny thing is my idea of the future always changes. When I was very young and had no real idea of the way life was, from what I saw, you grew up and were handed a job, got married and had kids. It all seemed very methodical. Life definitely isn’t the way I saw it as a young child and part of me is glad. Sure, finding a job is harder but it is nice having more choices than I knew. Now at 22, my idea of the future is different. As of right now, I don’t really want kids. Sure, I love kids but don’t really know if having them myself is for me. I’d love to eventually get married and hopefully have the money to travel and be more independent than if I had little kids running around. Perhaps as I get older, this mind frame of the future will change.

All you can do today is live in the present and be your best self for the future! Eat right, exercise, be kind to others, pamper yourself and give yourself the tools to make great decisions that will ensure a fabulous future!

What do you think? Does your idea of the future change the older you get? What do you think of when you ponder the future? I would love to hear your thoughts!
