Madrigal Chorale Holiday Concert

The Madrigal Chorale of Southfield (MCS) will present its most popular and ambitious event of the year Saturday, Dec. 3, at Old St. Mary’s Church in Detroit’s Greektown, when the prestigious chorale ensemble hosts its 2011 Holiday Concert with a musical celebration of the holiday season with song. According to Robert A. Martin, Ph.D., who is celebrating his 22nd season as Artistic Director of MCS, the 2011 Holiday Concert will enchant audiences with performances of many well-known pieces along with several that are less known. Seating begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $18 in advance for adults, student admission is $12.Tickets are available at the door for $20.

Nutcracker Ballet

The Michigan Classic Ballet Company presents it’s 22nd annual full-length production of The Nutcracker. Be transported by Tchaikovsky’s score into the Land of Snow and the Kingdom of Sweets, and fully experience the holidays this season. The production has been choreographed by Artistic Director Mary Celeste Geiger, and includes special guest artists from the Grand Rapids Ballet. Stephen Sanford dances the roles of Cavalier and Snow Prince; Sadie Brown appears as the Sugar Plum Fairy; and Geiger Ballet alumna Chelsea Clow dances the role of Arabian with Mark Naquin, who also performs the role of the Nutcracker.

Tickets are $22 for adults, $17 for seniors and children.

Auburn Hills Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony

Join the Mayor, City Council members, and Santa & Mrs. Claus at Auburn Hills’ annual Tree Lighting ceremony Friday, December 2, as they light up the magnificent tree and nearby city streets with sparkling holiday charm. Festivities start at 6 pm at the MOMS’ World War II Memorial on the corner of Squirrel & Auburn in Downtown Auburn Hills. After, there will be visits with Santa, carriage rides, a bonfire with s’mores, ornament crafts to decorate the tree, holiday music and more. All activities are free and within walking distance of the tree lighting ceremony. Donations of new winter coats, mittens, hats and gloves will also be accepted at the City’s Downtown Office at 3395 Auburn Road, Suite A, from 6 — 8pm December 2 only. Items will be given to area charities for holiday giving. This event is sponsored by the City’s Tax Increment Finance Authority (TIFA) with additional support from Meijer and Bass Pro Shop.

The Rochester Garden Club, a Branch of the Woman’s National Farm & Garden Association, presents the 65th Annual Greens Market, Friday, December 2 from 9-6 and Saturday, December 3 from 9-1, featuring affordable hand-crafted holidays gifts, ornaments, jewelry and knitted items, fresh roping and wreaths, hand-tied bows, herbal gifts, teas and dip mixes, permanent arrangements, cookies and gourmet treats. Many fresh arrangements will be available for purchase or you can have a unique arrangement created for you, using your materials or ours. Fresh greens selections include white pine, cedar and mixed roping cut to your specified length or by the coil, noble fir, boxwood and mixed noble fir wreaths in four sizes, bagged greens such as juniper, boxwood, incense cedar and white pine tips and mixed green swags.

All proceeds from the Greens Market are returned to the Rochester area in the form of financial gifts, grants, scholarships and community outreach programs and benefit such institutions as Rochester Hills Museum at Van Hoosen Farm, Rochester Hills Public Library and Dinosaur Hill Nature Preserve.

Free Yoga for a Cause at The Village

The classes are free with a donation to Pontiac’s Baldwin Center. The Baldwin Center is in need of toiletries, canned goods, warm coats and new unopened toys for teenagers.

Breakfast with Santa at the Detroit Zoo

Breakfast with Santa will be held in the Zoo’s Wildlife Interpretive Gallery on three consecutive Saturdays, Dec. 3, Dec. 10 and Dec. 17.

The cost, which includes Zoo admission and parking, is $30 for adults (ages 15 and older) and $25 for children (ages 14 and younger). The cost for Detroit Zoological Society members is $25 for adults and $20 for children. Tickets must be purchased for all children regardless of age as seating is limited. Advance reservations are necessary by calling (248) 541-5717 (press 3).

The jolly old elf himself will visit with guests, and every good little girl and boy will receive a holiday gift. The family event will also feature costumed characters, arts and crafts and holiday movies in the Wildlife Interpretive Gallery Theater. Photos with Santa will be available at an additional cost.
