Power, stability and ease emanates from your core (your center) improving nearly every movement you make and most yoga poses you flow in and out from. Your core is both physically and emotionally your center of balance and strength. Plugging into your core abdominal muscles stimulates an attitude of inner strength and confidence and stokes the third chakra, the fire center of both our destructive and creative energies.
Imagine if we moved through our daily life, without a core, without the ability to center ourselves and connect with our power source. Scary, right?
Every yoga pose and movement in our workouts is an opportunity to access and strengthen your core. Â Understanding what your core is anatomically and how to engage the deep muscles of your pelvis, spinal stabilizers and shoulder girdle to connect deeply and expand into your poses from the center outward – focusing on the core muscles and pulling the energy of your body into the midline is essential as we transition from pose to pose.
No wonder why my grandmother stuffed her entire mid-section into a miserably tight fitting girdle each morning before she could go about her day. It gave her support in so many ways. Sure, flattening her tummy was important and motivated her to wear the ugly under garment (thank goodness for “spanks” today). But, the feeling of support, strength and confidence she felt from wearing her girdle was equally essential. Â Learning to create a sense of stability and balance, and tapping into your inner knowing from your center gives one a wonderful feeling of inner strength and confidence – and the gift of knowing who we really are and what we are capable of doing physically. Priceless!
Try these five abdominal core strengthening exercises today! Hold each posture for five breathes then rest for 20-30 seconds. Repeat each exercise 3 to 5 times. Remember, you will get stronger just by trying!
