World’s Longest Lemonade Stand
A group of students, parents and teachers from Beverly Elementary are attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the world’s longest lemonade stand Aug. 20 at Beverly Park.
The group is selling stands from its website longestlemonadestand.com for $50 each. The stands are sold as pre-cut kits that can be put togheter with a screwdriver and decorated however one likes.
On the day of the event, participants will gather at Beverly Park and each lemonade stand will be connected by extensions to form what organizers hope is the longest lemonade stand in the world. The record for the world’s longest lemonade stand is 2,571 feet, 6 inches, set June 6, 2010 in Satow, Germany.
The event will also include food, drink and games. A portion of the proceeds from the events will go toward Birmingham Public Schools.

Fancy a movie under the stars? Then you are in luck, as the Detroit Institute of Arts’ (DIA) Detroit Film Theatre (DFT) and Mi Community Media present Summer Cinema Evenings (SCE) in cooperation with Huron Clinton Metroparks.
SCE is an outdoor, two-day movie event on Aug. 19 and 20 and will feature two animated, family-friendly films, Eleanor’s Secret on Friday, and Mia and the Migoo on Saturday. The winning entrants of the Romeo Student Film Festival 2011 will also be shown both nights.
The movies will be shown at dusk on a 60-foot screen at the park’s Baypoint Beach. Moviegoers are invited to bring along blankets, chairs, food and beverages (no glass please). Concessions will also be available.
Aside from the $5 per vehicle park admission (if you don’t already have an annual pass), this event is free.
As for the movies, here is a rundown of their plots:
Eleanor’s Secret is about 7-year-old Nathaniel, who can’t read, but his Aunt Eleanor has left him an inheritance of books. Unhappy with the collection at first, he soon discovers that the books are home to living versions of all the great fairy-tale character, and it’s his job to protect them.
Mia and the Migoo is the story of a young girl who must overcome her fears on a quest to find her father and save the world from destruction.
Primary funding for Summer Cinema Evenings comes from the DIA’s Detroit Film Theatre and Mi Community Media in collaboration with the Huron Clinton Metroparks. Sponsors also include Romeo/Washington/Bruce Parks and Recreation Dept., Macomb County Dept. of Planning & Economic Development and the townships of Bruce, Shelby and Washington.
