2nd Annual HAVEN Garden Project Wine Tasting Was a HIT!

haven-garden-projectWith over 70 wines from Cabernet to Zinfandel, the 2nd Annual Market Square Wine Tasting to benefit the HAVEN Garden Project was a hit! Last Friday night on June 10, 2011, 250 people gathered to support the HAVEN Garden and to sample different wines and delicious food courtesy of Market Square, unite with friends and meet new faces, and engage in a fabulous raffle! The raffle included gifts or services from local businesses, all which were donated to the cause. Attendees were also able to talk with gardeners from the HAVEN Garden, discuss their progress, and learn more about the on-going project.

There were ten tables placed in the gorgeous Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center, with six different wines from red to white at each table. Guests could stroll through the fabulous art center, chatting about the beautiful pieces of art and the progress of the HAVEN garden, trying new wines, and having some of the spread from Market Square, which of course included fresh fruit and vegetables.

By the end of the night, the HAVEN Garden Project raised approximately $10,000 ($4,830 from the event and $5,000 from private donations), which will keep the HAVEN garden going strong for the entire 2011 growing season.

Last year, the garden grew 2 1/2 tons of produce. They feed residents from the HAVEN shelter and clinic, the people who work in the garden, and give weekly to the Grace City of Hope and Gleaners food bank in Oakland County, mainly giving to the Pontiac area to families in need.

The HAVEN Garden Project is a collaborative half-acre organic micro farm and educational space located in Pontiac, Michigan at the HAVEN-Oakland Emergency shelter. The Garden Project serves the HAVEN Community by providing fresh organic produce on a weekly basis to shelter residents and off-site clients; coordinating the preservation and storage of harvested produce; and offering agriculture education and garden stewardship opportunities to youth and adults.
