Pose of the Month: Headstand – Sirsasana

yoga-headstand“The ancient books have called Sirsasana the king of all asana… The skull encases the brain, which controls the nervous system and the organs of sense. The brain is the seat of intelligence, knowledge, discrimination, wisdom and power… A country cannot prosper without a proper king or constitutional head to guide it; so also the human body cannot prosper without a healthy brain.” Iyengar, Light On Yoga

In Headstand, there is an increased blood flow to the head, brain, pineal and pituitary glands, which improves their function. Headstand is said to increase vitality, memory and brain function and improve sleep.
