What’s For Fitness? Tip #8 Skipping For Joy!

Hallelujah! We made it to Friday and we’re skipping for joy! Yep, you heard it right; SKIPPING! I can only imagine what you’re thinking right now. “What? Is she nuts? I’m not skipping and she’ll never know.” No, I’m not nuts and you’re right; I will never know if you skip or not – but you will!

It’s the weekend, no more work – time to play, play, play! Do you remember the word play? Do you remember how simple play made you feel; inside and out? I can’t think of a better time to unleash your inner child – rejoice and revel in the freedom and spontaneity of simple, unrestricted,  joyful movement, than now!  At one time or another, we all pine for those uncomplicated childhood days, when nothing seemed to matter and nothing was more important than our time to play.

Skipping, just for the fun of it, gives us an opportunity to connect with our child-like selves. We need this, we actually crave this kind of activity and the feeling it creates inside of us. So, today I want you to skip! Skip to your mailbox and gleefully collect your mail; even if you dread the contents. Perhaps a new approach to the mailbox will bring you a gift instead of a bill. Who knows? Just give it a try today. If you’re worried about the neighbors you can always skip with a jumprope in private or you could ask them to join you. Ha! The fun really exists in feeling ridiculous.

Skipping is no longer confined to the school playground. Boxers use skipping as training before a fight and it is now incorporated into many gym classes and boot camp style workouts. An excellent way to keep fit, skipping can be done anywhere, anytime.

The benefits of skipping

Skipping will help improve cardio-respiratory (heart and lungs) fitness, flexibility and co-ordination. As a high-impact exercise skipping is great for building bones and a super exercise to trim your hips, bum, belly and thighs!

Burning calories skipping

Depending on your weight and exertion level you’ll burn between 70-110 extra calories in a ten minute session. Impressive! 10 min Skipping:

  • Moderate, 70 calories
  • Vigorous, 110 calories

Let loose today and allow yourself to enjoy the fun and fitness of skipping!  You can do this!
