Each month 117-159 girls are being sexually exploited across the state of Michigan! Girls are being sold for sex, right here, right now.
If that didn’t grab your attention and cause your blood pressure to rise, I’m not sure what will. What a shame that our nation now has to have a National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month. We as a society should be ashamed that young girls, sometimes as young as 5 years old, are being sold for sex. We should be ashamed and furious that the adult males in our county are buying sex from these young girls. Children exploited through sex trafficking have an average life expectancy of seven short years.
Yes, human trafficking is an international problem but we in the United States and in Michigan can no longer put our heads in the sand and pretend that it only happens in third world countries. The root causes of human trafficking are the same as what causes domestic and sexual violence — a society that condones and tolerates violence against women, a society that still has a long way to go in achieving equality for women, and a society that still views women and girls as sexual beings versus human beings.
Today I had the opportunity to attend a Town Hall sponsored by the Michigan Women’s Foundation and Global Projects, two local organizations willing to take on this gigantic problem. At this town hall, participants were encouraged to get informed and get involved. Let me share with you their calls to action. Go to www.miwf.org to learn more about Michigan’s A Future Not A Past project and to learn more about Global Projects go to www.globalprojectshelp.webs.co Call Real Detroit weekly at 248-591-7325 and tell them to stop using backpage.com for their classified section until Backpage stops users from buying and selling underage girls.
Use the upcoming Super Bowl Sunday as an opportunity to spread the word that “Real Men Don’t Have Sex With Girls” and teach the boys and men in your life how to have healthy relationships, free from violence.
Support organizations that are working to end sex trafficking exploitation in Michigan.
Call the National Human Trafficking Resource Center to report a tip, to connect with anti-trafficking services, or for general information at 888-373-7888.
And to add another timely plea, it is expected that many children will be trafficked into Dallas Forth Worth area in a few weeks to “accommodate” the visitors for Super Bowl. Please contact the Super Bowl Committee and take a stand about human trafficking: http://bit.ly/eSzAf7
