If your compassion does not include yourself it is incomplete. -Jack Kanfield
We all have days when we are just plain down on ourselves. Days that we tell ourselves that we are just not good enough. If only we were smarter, more efficient, more witty, more attractive. On these kinds of days we just want to go back to bed and pull the covers over our eyes. I don’t think that most of us would ever talk to our friends the way we talk to ourselves. Instead we would tenderly remind them of their strengths, their wonderful qualities, their beautiful hearts. We may even give them a hug and let them know that we are always there for them.
It is vital that you bring this same kind of loving-kindness to yourself. When you do this everything in your life works better. You feel more alert, alive, playful, peaceful and joyful.
Begin by putting a hand on your heart as your connect with your breath. And for just a moment tune into the preciousness of yourself. Spend some time really feeling this in your soul. Let compassion towards yourself well up inside of you. Life is not always easy but there is a very strong and beautiful part of you that is never broken.
As you inhale, send loving-kindness and compassion to yourself. Send it to every organ, every cell, every bone, every system of your body. As you deeply feel that kindness, send it to the imperfectly perfect being that you are. After you have given that love to yourself …take a deep breath and exhale as you send that feeling of love out to the whole world. Take another deep breath and let it out and see how much more peaceful you feel, how much less anxious, how much more free.
Repeat as often as needed.
