The Nordstrom Corporation recently launched a new company-wide Wellness Care program to help employees improve their health and reduce yearly healthcare costs. I introduced them to the 10,000 steps-a-day walking program, endorsed by the American Heart Association as an easy, convenient, inexpensive and fun way to get healthy and lower healthcare costs. When I first spoke the words “10,000 steps,” most of the audience members gasped. It’s such a big number — it seems almost impossible. But it’s not.

With a one-day-at-a-time perspective, walking your way to good health is entirely doable. You’ll begin with 1,000-3,000 steps, the average number a sedentary person moves in a day — which is unacceptable to the AHA!

Our goal is to guide you in adding 500 steps each week to your daily total until you reach 10,000 .

Purchase a pedometer and put it on as soon as you get out of bed in the morning. Take it off only before going to sleep at night. Do this for 3 consecutive days to determine your average number of steps per day.
