Whenever my husband agrees to go for a walk with me, which always includes our dogs, Adam and Louie, I respond with the kind of excitement you might see when someone strikes it rich from a scratch off lottery game ticket. If you’ve ever won 5 or 10 dollars from a gas station game ticket then you understand this ridiculous display of enthusiasm. Jumping up and down, screaming and gyrating like a 12 year old cheerleader. “Really, I won?, can you believe it? I actually won something!, I never win anything!, I must have done something right today!” You call your mother, you call your girlfriends, you call your kids, you may even call your husband knowing his response will be something like, “really, that’s nice honey”, or “are you serious, that’s great honey”, when of course he’s really thinking you’re a pathetic moron and he’s married to you, yet grateful that it doesn’t take much to excite you and he loves you anyway.
Minus the gymnastics, my excitement is more than obvious to him. When my hubby is willing to do something physical with me, that I want to do, other than moving furniture or having sex, I’m shocked! Immediately, I love him more then ever, I think he’s great, almost the perfect husband. Simply, because we are going for a walk together. I do, however, have strict parameters as we head out the door for our walk. I must never refer to our walk as a “workout” or talk about the benefits of exercise, and he decides the direction and distance of our trek. I take what I can get and I don’t complain. I’m just happy to be alone with my husband, exercising, breathing fresh air, talking and hearing one another, ultimately taking care of each other. Having his full attention is deeply satisfying and rewarding. Often a turn on! Once I get my husband on the beach or street for our “workout” (shhh…) he’s like putty in my hands. I’ll suggest we jump into the hot tub after our walk, share a glass of wine and offer to be his personal stretcher. Anything is possible at this point. The benefits and rewards of exercising with your partner are huge.
Couples spend most of their time apart due to career demands and family responsibilities. Instead of heading to the gym or exercise class alone, schedule a workout with your partner that agrees with both of your schedules and take turns choosing the type of exercise. You’ll have quality time together and get a great workout! It’s a win,win plan!
Working out together creates a deeper bond. Exercise produces chemicals in the brain (norepinephrine and dopamine) that evoke feelings of happiness, reduce stress, and also increase arousal and libido. Several studies show that men and women who exercise regularly report better (and more frequent) sex with their partner. Read this paragraph to your husband before you ask him to workout with you and see what happens. Your delivery is important!
Getting encouragement and praise from your partner is one of the best motivators to stay with your fitness goals. Exercising together is also a way of taking care of each other. Taking care of your body and health shows your partner that you want to be the best for them-and that you are planning on a long life together. Respect and pride are essential for any successful marriage or partnership.
Adding exercise to your list of shared interests and leisure time together can open the door to new activities and experiences keeping excitement alive in your relationship.
Here a few of my favorite partner workouts:
Take a power walk or bike ride together in your neighborhood or head to a nearby nature trail for a change of scenery. If you’re on vacation hit the beach, for sure. And if you want your hubby coming back for more invigorating power walks with you avoid conversation that may produce stress or tension. Keep it light and loving!
Take a spinning class or martial arts class together. Both of these are high energy workouts, perfect for different fitness levels, and a lot of fun. Fun is the operative word here! Your workouts together must be fun or they will not last.
Try a yoga class or latin dance class together for fitness out of the box. Both of these bring on a great sweat and turn up the heat factor! Lean into his ear and suggest a little workout after-glow. He will definitely want to come back for more and so will you!
If finding time to workout away from home is not an option, grab your workout gear and a motivating fitness DVD. Workouts at home can be great exercise and just as much fun. Here a few powerful workout DVD suggestions:
