Accessorizing Your Wardrobe This Fall, Post Fashion Week

It’s now been a little over a week since New York’s Fall Fashion Week swept into the city and overtook with it’s glitzy industry parties, frenzied fashion editors and hopelessly lithe models (appearing seemingly everywhere). It was a bewildering, yet glamourous whirlwind of a week and for better or worse, it’s all over now. The city and it’s inhabitants survived and are left little changed save for our recent discoveries about this season’s top trends, particularly those regarding accessories, and our near uncontrollable urges to go out and buy them all. Immediately. Here are few accessory trends worth giving into:

Buckles: Buckles are absolutely everywhere this season, popping up on frequently on footwear. This season, make sure you boots have a wrap around strap somewhere and secure with a buckle. Or if you’re not a footwear fiend, seek out a purse with a buckle clamped on the front of it. Take a look at Madewell’s buckled, mid-calf, black leather biker boots for $230.

Metal and Hardware: This fall accessories are all about metal and hardware. Heavily embellished mini dresses and tops with delicate chains hanging from the neckline are chic and edgy. Chainmail (think Richard Gere’s battle vest in First Knight) is also making a comeback. Rag & Bone featured a women’s chainmail shirt and men’s chainmail scarf in their Fall 2009 collection. But for those not completely sold on the Celtic era throwback, bracelets and necklaces will do just fine. Check out the Antique Gold Manor Necklace with gold resin beads and textured brass chain from J.Crew for $128, or the black and silver multi chain watch from La Mer for $120.

Hats: Sure, the fedora has been in for quite some time now and yes, it still is, but this fall it’s time to branch out from your trusty fedora and try a slightly different shape like the floppy boho hat. A modified bucket, the boho floppy has more shape and structure but is still tilted and playful. The bowler is another hot shape. More important than shape, this trend is all about fabrics so trade in your straw topper for a felt one. For more luxurious feel, get one in velvet, tweed or wool. You couldn’t ask for more fall-like fabrics.

Green Accents: While not an accessory itself, green is the ultimate accent color this fall. Jade stones, green emeralds and moss-hued manicures are popping up everywhere this season on the runways and in the shops. Inspire green envy with sage green nails using Essie’s Greenport polish for $8.

Fur: Real or faux, furriness is in. Turning up on gilets, vests, stoles and coat trims, fur is warming up all outfits this season. If can’t afford or bear to wear the real thing, head to H&M to get your faux fur fix, where they’ve got a plethora of soft stoles, vests and jackets, starting from $29.99.

Studs: Yes, we’re talking metal again (seriously, it’s everywhere). Brass, gunmetal, gold and tarnished silver: they’re showing up on jackets, blazers, boots, sneakers, bags and even leggings. Ease into the trend with a fitted black blazer with discreet silver studs on the cuffs, lapels and pockets from Express for $128.

Oxfords: After receiving a minimal amount of fanfare last year, this fall oxfords are back and bigger that ever. Menswear inspired, these shoes look like something your grandpa might wear, but paired with darkly-colored tights and minis, are certainly not. Popular in classic black, chocolate and tan, oxfords in electric blue and canary yellow patent leather are fun, unexpected twists on the trend. Try the purple faux suede pair from Kaight for $99.

Cross-body Bags: They’re exactly what they sound like, bags that go across your body; both practical and stylish. Whether they’re oversized, medium or clutch sized anything that goes above your head and across your body is chic this fall. Look for bags that are adjustable or have dual straps, one to go over your shoulder and another, longer strap for across it. Because really, when you’re shopping, you just want your hands free for more bags.
