Ever lie in bed thinking about tomorrow’s meeting, workload or grocery list? Ever wish you could stop thinking about whatever it is and just fall asleep already? Here’s some tips to help you fall asleep faster:
Do get a routine. Washing your face or brushing your teeth right before hitting the sack every night will get your brain in the mindset for sleep.
Don’t watch TV or browse the internet at least 30 minutes before going to bed. It will stimulate your brain, making it harder to mentally shut down.
Do block out any external noises. Close the door if you have roommates or family members who are night owls. Minimal sound is key.
Don’t wear anything constricting. Tight clothing can bunch and twist, making it so that you’re constantly having to adjust. Wear loose PJs, or better yet, sleep naked!
Do practice deep breathing. Lie flat on your back and breath in and out of your nose, focusing on the lengths of your inhales and exhales. Concentrating on a physical element of the body, instead of what happened earlier in the day will relax your mind.
Don’t use your bed for anything other than sleeping. If you sit on the computer or bring your work into bed, it will become your work space instead of your sleep space.
Do get on a regular sleep schedule, going to bed at the same time every night. Your body will become used to the schedule and come to expect sleep.
Don’t exercise less than three hours before hitting the hay. Working out right before you go to bed will give you a rush of endorphins, making it difficult to calm down.
Do take care of any little tasks for tomorrow. Simple chores like making your lunch for work, will give you a sense of accomplishment and make you less stressed about the following day’s activities.
